Poem: It’s Not Okay to Hit a Kid

It’s not okay to hit a kid

Why do you do it?

Just ’cause your parents did?

About the poem:

This week I’m teaching the John Denver song, “Sunshine on my Shoulders”. Before we listen to the song, the kids write what makes them happy, can make them cry, looks so lovely, and almost always makes them high.

Two girls and one boy chose “Mom hitting me” for what can make them cry.

This puts me in an awkward situation. But I tell them clearly, I think it’s not okay to hit a kid. What can we teach our kids by hitting them? Nothing good.

  1. The arguments for and against hitting kids go on without any conclusion but I think it depends on the situation. Spare the rod and spoil the child. Just as the Lord chastens those He loves parents hit their children when that is the right thing to do (Hebrews 12:5-11).

    • Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Respectfully, I disagree 100%. Anger and violence are the land mines of our relationships. Adults should not teach these as solutions. I understand that many will disagree with my opinion. Thank you for reading and for considering these very important ideas with me! peace & love!
